We know how important vitamin D is for optimal health and its benefits for treating bone health, muscle weakness and even mood disorders is highly publicised. However, there is more to this super vitamin than meets the eye.
In this two-part post we’ll share six surprising benefits of vitamin D.
Boosts weight loss
Vitamin D optimizes our body’s ability to absorb other important nutrients which aid with weight loss. One of these is calcium. If our body lacks calcium, it can lead to up to 5-fold increase in fatty acids synthesis, an enzyme that converts calories into fats. By fuelling our bodies with Vitamin D rich nutrients, you can potentially lose weight up to 60 %.
Helps prevent MS
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that involves the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves of the eyes. Certain studies suggest that adequate blood vitamin D levels may help lower the risk of MS by up to 62%. In addition, individuals with MS who are able to maintain high vitamin D levels may even slow down the progression of their disease. Studies with regard to vitamin D and MS are still ongoing but based on the limited numbers of studies available the results look promising.
Offers protection against low forms of radiation
Radiological health expert Daniel Hayes, Ph.D., of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene suggests that a form of vitamin D could be one of our body’s main protections against radiation, specifically low levels of radiation. Writing in the International Journal of Low Radiation, Hayes explains that calcitriol (vitamin D3), the active form of vitamin D, may protect us from background radiation and could be used as a safe protective agent before or after a low-level nuclear incident.
